Local History and Genealogy Collection
Explore the early history of Northville or research your family tree with online and print resources in the Local History Room on the library’s lower level.

NORTHVILLE HISTORY INDEX ONLINE: The Library provides access to a bibliographic database compiled by volunteers who pore through the library's Local History holdings (primarily the Northville Record microfilm) in an effort to make it easy to find information in this massive archive. The Northville History Index (NHI) was developed to create an easy to use interface that includes all the necessary tools for the casual searcher, and the volunteers alike.

ARCHIVES: Over 90 printed sources on Northville from its earliest settlement, including cemetery indexes, transcripts of oral histories, and booklets such as “The Ideal Suburban Village”. Researchers have access to copies of these sources, for use in the library or for photocopying.

LOCAL HISTORY DATABASE: A great starting point for the researcher, this contains two indexes to information on Northville. The Master Index lists person and topics found in the archives. The Northville Record Index covers the early years of the Northville Record, from 1869 to 1916. 1917 and 1918 should be ready soon. You may search by subject, including names, events, and places. THE NORTHVILLE RECORD ON MICROFILM: The entire run of The Northville Record, from 1869 to the present, is available for viewing using the Microfilm Reader/Printer. The latest issue is usually about six months earlier than the printed issue. Begin searching the Northville Record Index with the Northville History Index

GENEALOGY COMPUTER AND SOFTWARE: Begin searching your family tree, using the library’s genealogy computer along with Family Tree and Family Quest software, which offers guidelines and templates for organizing the information. The software also includes many data collections, including census and other records. You may save your information to a disk.

COOPERATION WITH LOCAL SOCIETIES: The Library teams with the Northville Historical Society and the Northville Genealogical Society to provide the most knowledgable people about the history of the Northville, Michigan area.

ANCESTRY PLUS: This comprehensive subscription database is available on all the library’s Internet and Research computers as well as the Genealogy computer.

U.S. CENSUS ON MICROFILM: The Library owns the Michigan portion of the Federal census for the Northville area from 1820 up to 1920. In addition, microfilm for other areas of the U.S. is available through Interlibrary Loan.

BOOKS AND VIDEOS: Directories and how-to manuals are available for in-library use and checkout. Many of these resources have been donated by the Northville Genealogical Society.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY FOR LOCAL HISTORY BUFFS!
Interested in learning more about early Northville? Become a volunteer Indexer for the Northville Record Indexing Project. This involves about 1 to 2 hours per week reading microfilm of the Northville Record in the 1920’s, and recording topics, events and persons onto worksheets. This information is then added to the Local History Database.
