Northville District Library Magazines and Informational Databases
  Troubleshooting the Databases

Most of the problems associated with use of these databases are browser issues. The following browsers have been tested to work properly with Northville District Library's Database Page:

  • Netscape 4.x
  • Netscape 6.x
  • Netscape 7.x
  • Opera 5.x
  • Opera 6.x
  • Opera 7.x
  • Mozilla (versions 0.9x and above)
  • MSIE 5.x
  • MSIE 6.x
  • MSN Explorer
  • K-Meleon (all)
  • PWB (all)

If you are using any browser but the above, we cannot verify that the system will work properly for you. If you do use another browser that is not listed, please contact us via the Electronic Problem Report Form to verify that an unlisted browser works correctly.

The second most likely issue to arise is that your browser does NOT have COOKIES or SCRIPTING enabled. Each of these features absolutely MUST be enabled for the login mechanism to work properly. If cookies or scripting are not enabled, you cannot log in, and will get an error screen reminding you of such.

The third most likely issue involves firewalls. If you're running a personal firewall, or behind a corporate firewall with particularly restrictive filtering rules, it can affect your ability to use this database page. The easiest fix in this case would be to fix the firewall to allow full access to the northville.lib.mi.us domain.

The fourth most likely problem is that you do not have a valid library card with the Northville District Library, located in Northville, Michigan. This server is intended only for holders of a valid Northville District Library card. You can obtain a card by visiting the library.

NetZero HiSpeed
The NetZero HiSpeed service is essentially a shared "web cache" solution. It tends to interfere with anything that uses a proxy, like accessing the databases via Northville's iData service.

In most instances, an icon has appeared in the system tray in the lower-right corner of the screen which contains an option to disable HiSpeed. Using this option enables service for most users.

There have been reports of users for whom this did not work. For those users, the following instructions have provided a work-around:

  1. Launch Internet Explorer
  2. Go to Tools | Internet Options...
  3. Click on the Connections tab
  4. Scroll through the Dial-up settings to locate NetZero, then click on NetZero and click Settings...
  5. Under Proxy Server, click Advanced...
  6. In Exceptions, scroll to the end of the list, then type a semi-colon (;) followed by just the host name of the Northville iData server (e.g. idata.northville.lib.mi.us).
  7. All the other sample entries have an asterisk (*) in front, and although it won't hurt, that isn't required for this entry.
  8. Keep hitting OK until all the windows close and you are back in Internet Explorer.

If you have addressed these issues and the system is still not working, please peruse the Electronic Problem Report Form, which is located at the bottom of every single page within the Northville District Library website.
