FIGURING TEAM POINTS

BATTER POINTS: Batter points are the total of runs + runs batted in – homeruns – errors accumulated by the eight non-pitchers of your team’s roster. Homeruns are subtracted because they count as both a run scored and a run batted in. Therefore, actual runs produced are more accurately reflected by subtracting one point for each homerun hit.

BATTER POINTS = RUNSs + RBIs – HRs – ERRORs

PITCHING POINTS: Your team’s earned run average is the total of earned runs allowed by your team’s pitching staff, divided by their total innings pitched, multiplied by nine (innings per game). Relief pitcher’s generally pitch about one third the number of innings as does a starter. Therefore relief pitchers’ earned runs and innings pitched are tripled prior to figuring your team’s ERA to add weight to this crucial role so that their performance is roughly as important as a starter.

League ERA is the current overall earned run average of all the teams participating in the library’s Fantasy Baseball Program. Your team’s PITCHER POINTS are figured as follows:

PITCHER POINTS = LEAGUE ERA / TEAM ERA

If your team ERA is less than the average ERA of the library’s participants, you will have pitcher points that exceed 1.
If your team ERA is higher than the average ERA of participants, you will have pitcher points which are less than 1.
Pitcher points, therefore, increase or decrease your team’s total points already accumulated by computing batter points.

TEAM POINTS = BATTER POINTS * PITCHER POINTS or
TEAM POINTS = (RUNs + RBIs - HRs - ERRORs) * (LEAGUE ERA / TEAM ERA)

FIGURING STANDINGS AND WON-LOSS RECORDS

Standings, within a given division, are determined by TEAM POINTS. To offer a more recognizable form of standings (as you might see on a sports page), wins, losses, and games behind are computed as described below.

Major League teams are each scheduled to play 162 games per season. If the library is running its program for 14 weeks (opening day to the All-Star break), then each week is worth 11.57 games (162 /14 = 11.571428). An average team would therefore win 5.79 games per week (11.57 / 2 = 5.79).

The total team points of all six teams in a given division are added together and divided by six (teams per division) to find the division average.

The won-loss record of a particular team is determined first by dividing the team points by the division average.

TEAM POINTS / DIVISION AVERAGE

If a team has more points than the division average, then it will produce a number greater than 1. If a team has fewer points than the division average, then it will produce a number less than 1. This number is then multiplied by the number of games an average teams would have won at that point of the season.

(TEAM POINTS / DIVISION AVERAGE) * (5.79 * weeks of play)

This equation (rounded to the nearest whole number) determines the number of hypothetical victories won by a particular team. Losses are the remainder of hypothetical games played at that point of the season (rounded to the nearest whole number). Games behind are then figured accordingly.
